Often called provocative, unpredictable, and inventive, he is a well-known Haitian clothing designer with 19 years of experience. Speaking of provocative, he is the first Haitian designer to have female models walk the runway topless and male models walk in G-strings for an underwear fashion show. His name is David Andre, born in Haiti on July 17^th, 1979. He currently resides in Haiti, although David considers himself a citizen of the world with a career that has brought him all over the globe.  After his classical studies, David Andre decided that he wanted to purse his dreams in fashion which he always had since childhood. He attended the Academy Faith Verona in Haiti, where he began taking classes in Sketching, and pattern making. He also attended Formamod, a top fashion school in Paris.

Souvent appelé provocateur, imprévisible et inventif, il est un célèbre designer Haïtien de vêtements avec 19 ans d’expérience. Parlant de provocateur, il est le premier designer Haïtien à avoir des modèles féminins parcourant la piste en topless et les modèles masculins se promenant dans G-strings pour un défilé de mode pour les sous-vêtements. Il s’appelle David André, né en Haïti le 17 juillet 1979. Il réside actuellement en Haïti, même s’il se considère comme un citoyen du monde (cosmopolite) étant donné que sa carrière l’a amené partout dans le monde. Après ses études classiques, David André a décidé de réaliser ses rêves dans le domaine de la mode, chose qu’il avait toujours à l’esprit depuis son enfance. Il a assisté à l’Académie Faith Verona en Haïti, où il a commencé à prendre des cours en Sketching et à faire des modèles. Il a également assisté à Formamod, une école de mode à Paris.

In the late 1990s, David had his first showcase where he worked with models from Academie Perfection, a modeling agency at the time owned by Magalie Racine. Later in the early 2000s, along with a friend, David decided to create a professional modeling agency called Indice Face Model Agency. Unfortunately, like many modeling agencies at the time, it did not last. “I was too busy in my career” David explained. “We have some beautiful girls and handsome boys with all the international criteria to become top models, but we need to have professional agencies with good structure to promote them internationally. Modeling is a real business, not a game.” he continued.

À la fin des années 1990, David a eu sa première showcase où il a travaillé avec des modèles de l’Académie Perfection, agence de mannequins à l’époque détenue par Magalie Racine. Plus tard au début des années 2000, avec un ami, David a décidé de créer une agence de mannequins professionnelle appelée Indice Face Model Agency. Malheureusement, comme beaucoup d’agences  à l’époque, cela n’a pas duré. «J’étais trop occupé dans ma carrière » expliqua David. «Nous avons de belles filles et de beaux garçons avec tous les critères internationaux pour devenir les meilleurs modèles, mais nous devons avoir des agences professionnelles dotées d’une bonne structure pour la promotion à l’échelle internationale. La modélisation est une entreprise réelle, pas un jeu.» qu’il a continué.

 

David continued to improve his work throughout the years with experiences from working for Haitian movie productions, musicals, and dance representations.  In 2008 David started his international debut. He mesmerized and put the Haitian fashion industry on the international runway in places such as Toronto, The Bahamas, Miami, Dominican Republic, New York, Trinidad, Martinique, Ecuador, Berlin, Paris, Jamaica and many more countries. “I am not ready to stop” David states to confirm that he will definitely pursue many more countries. David Andre has designed for many Haitian celebrities and artists like Belo, Tifane, Lunise Morse, Renette Desir, Fabienne Denis, kompa groups like Kompa Kreyol, Krezi Mizik and many more. He also would like to work with Haitian singer Emeline Michel, Mary J Blige, Naomi Campbell, Monica Belluci and former first lady Michelle Obama.

David a continué à améliorer son travail tout au long des années avec des expériences de travail pour les productions de films Haïtiens, les comédies musicales et les représentations de danse. En 2008, David a débuté ses débuts internationaux. Il a fasciné et a mis l’industrie de la mode Haïtienne sur la piste internationale dans des endroits tels que Toronto, les Bahamas, Miami, la République Dominicaine, New York, Trinitad, la Martinique, l’Équateur, Berlin, Paris, la Jamaïque et bien d’autres pays. « Je ne suis pas prêt à arrêter » David affirme de confirmer qu’il va certainement poursuivre de nombreux autres pays. David Andre a conçu pour de nombreuses célébrités Haïtiennes et des artistes comme Belo, Tifane, Lunise Morse, Renette Desir, Fabienne Denis, kompa groupes comme Kompa Kreyol,  Krezi Mizik et bien d’autres encore. Il aimerait également travailler avec le chanteur Haitien Emeline Michel, Mary J Blige, Naomi Campbell, Monica Belluci et l’ex-première femme Michelle Obama.

When asked about his opinion on the Haitian Fashion industry David certainly acknowledges the improvement made within the last 5 years. The creation of Haiti Fashion Week has given designers a platform to showcase their work. Models, hairstylists, makeup artists, and many more actors of this industry get to work hard to get exposure.  Many companies, networks, and organizations have worked hard throughout the past years to improve the industry. To name a couple of these hard working companies mentioned by David, HAND (Haitian network of designers) and Mod Ayiti are dedicated to help designers put out their best work. Still, on the positive note, David recognizes the interest of the new generation in fashion.

Lorsqu’on lui a demandé son avis sur l’industrie haïtienne de la mode, David reconnaît certainement l’amélioration réalisée au cours des 5 dernières années. La création de Haïti Fashion Week a donné aux designers une plate-forme pour montrer leur travail. Les modèles, les coiffeurs, les maquilleurs et beaucoup d’autres acteurs de cette industrie se mettent à travailler dur pour se faire exposer. Beaucoup d’entreprises, de réseaux et d’organisations ont travaillé dur au cours des dernières années pour améliorer l’industrie. Pour nommer quelques entreprises mentionné par David, HAND (réseau haïtien de concepteurs) et Mod Ayiti sont dédiés à aider les concepteurs à faire leur meilleur travail. Toujours sur la note positive, David reconnaît l’intérêt de la nouvelle génération à la mode.

In life there are negative sides to everything, the industry is no different. David believes that there is a lack of fashion schools and fashion magazines to inform the public about the subject. “Models need to get more respect and get paid when they work,” he states. There are no serious copyright laws when it comes to fashion design which means that a designer’s work can be stolen or used without consent. Furthermore, the importation of “pepe” (used clothing)  is killing the sector. The Haitian youth needs to utilize Haitian production, which will enable the industry to go forward.

One of David’s best memories was when his work was featured on the cover of Ticket Magazine, he was told that it was a best seller. In 2013, David had the honor to design the costumes for the Haitian Olympics delegation in Nice, France. One of his greatest moments revolves around the exposition of his collection “Choukoune” by BIMAD in some museums in Spain. When asked about his down moments, David humbly states: “Oh yes! I am human, we all have ups and downs in this life. When I realize how far that I come from to be where I am today. I don’t have any choice, to move on further.”

L’un des meilleurs souvenirs de David a été lorsque son travail a été présenté sur la couverture de Ticket Magazine, on lui a dit que c’était un best-seller. En 2013, David a eu l’honneur de concevoir les costumes pour la délégation olympique Haïtienne à Nice, en France. L’un de ses plus grands moments tourne autour de l’exposition de sa collection « Choukoune » de BIMAD dans certains musées d’Espagne. Lorsqu’on lui a posé des questions sur ses moments de détresse, David déclare avec humilité: « Oh oui! Je suis humain, nous avons tous des hauts et des bas dans cette vie. Quand je me rends compte de la mesure dans laquelle je viens, d’être là où je suis aujourd’hui. Je n’ai pas le choix, d’aller de l’avant. »

When it comes to his future in Fashion, David is confident and motivated. He plans to launch his underwear line. Aside from his current clothing store in Haiti, distributions in the Dominican Republic and Guadeloupe, David is working on having his collection available throughout the Caribbean. Because he believes that education is key, David also plans on going back to school in Paris. In fact, he would love to intern for the Rue Cambon Chanel atelier in Paris because there is so much to learn. Education is endless even in the fashion industry. His inspiration comes from nature, the sea, flowers, paintings, fabrics, and from some vintage clothes. “…and all the fashion trends of course! It’s important as a designer to be aware of what’s going on around you,” he says when asked about what inspired him. “Haute couture is magic” he boldly states.

Quand il s’agit de son avenir dans le fashion, David est confiant et motivé. Il envisage de lancer sa ligne de sous-vêtements. À côté de son magasin actuel de vêtements en Haïti, ses distributions en République dominicaine et en Guadeloupe, David travaille pour avoir sa collection disponible dans les Caraïbes. Selon sa croyance que l’éducation est la clé, David envisage également de retourner à l’école à Paris. En fait, il aimerait faire un stage pour l’atelier de la rue Cambon Chanel à Paris, car on a toujours quelque chose à apprendre. De son côté, l’éducation est un cycle continu, pareille chose dans l’industrie de la mode. Son inspiration vient de la nature, de la mer, d’une fleur, d’un tableau, d’un tissu,  de vêtements anciens et toutes les tendances de la mode bien sûr! Pour reprendre ses dires, « Il est important, en tant que concepteur, de prendre conscience de ce qui se passe autour de vous. » David nous rapporte  lorsqu’il a été interrogé sur ce qui l’a inspiré, il a répondu « La haute couture est magique », affirme-t-il avec audace.

Designing is his passion, it is in his blood. To him, being a fashion designer takes a lot of creativity and it is not for everyone. The business is tough and stressful. In Haiti, designers don’t have to deal with the season because it is always tropical. The lack of resources such as fabric and trimming stores can be a barricade for designers when It comes to creating a collection. “The biggest challenge to be a designer in Haiti, you have to do almost everything on your own if you don’t have the financial resources to have a good staff to help you,” David says. Once a designer is financially stable, have the resources, can create great work, and build a clientele, there is great profit to be made according to David. To him, Fashion is luxury and there is a great living out of it.

Le design est sa passion, c’est dans son sang. Pour lui, être un designer requiert beaucoup de créativité et ce n’est pas permis à tout le monde. L’entreprise est difficile et stressante. En Haïti, les concepteurs ne doivent pas faire face à la saison,  car c’est toujours tropicale. La déficience de ressources telles que le tissu et les magasins de coupe peut être une barricade pour les créateurs quand il s’agit de créer une collection. « Le plus grand défi d’un designer en Haïti, c’est que vous devez réaliser presque tout avec vos fonds,  vous n’avez pas les ressources financières pour avoir un bon personnel pour vous aider », a déclaré David. Une fois qu’un concepteur est financièrement stable, dispose de ressources, il peut créer un excellent travail et construire une clientèle, il y a un grand profit à réaliser selon David. Pour lui, la mode est un luxe et il y a une grande vie.

David Andre has greatly contributed to the evolution of fashion in Haiti. He has showcased his work as a Haitian fashion designer in many countries. “I am very proud to see how people talk in a good way about Haiti in the press after the shows. I believe that art is a good way to change the image of a country” David Andre tells us. He has worked with many Haitian models and has produced his clothing in Haiti throughout his years in the business. Regarding competition, David does not want to focus on that. “We are all in the same boat, facing the same problems every day. Let’s call a cat a cat, not a dog. We aren’t ready for a fair competition in Haiti” he says. “When you are walking on the fifth avenue in New York, Chanel, Cartier, Armani, are next to each other, and they all have their clientele and they sell millions per year.” He continued.

David Andre’s advice for people wanting to make a career in the fashion industry is as follow, to have real determination, to go to school to learn the basics, and to not be discouraged by people. Nothing is impossible according to David. “sky is the limit” he says. He advises never to take “No” for an answer and to be humble, open-minded, and to be alert. Finally, he advises to always pray because God is the greatest.
