Her name is Ania FanFan Alcius, born in Haiti and currently resides in Florida, she is a well-known makeup artist and owner of AMC Cosmetics. In the early 2000s wearing makeup was not popular. “People could not apply it properly. I knew it would be the spotlight in the future”, she says. With this assurance, Ania decided to launch herself into the art of makeup artistry.

Son nom est Ania FanFan Alcius, née en Haïti et réside actuellement en Floride, elle est une maquilleuse bien connue et propriétaire de AMC Cosmetics . Au début des années 2000, le maquillage n’était pas populaire. « Les gens ne pouvaient pas l’appliquer correctement. Je savais que ce serait le projecteur de l’avenir « , dit-elle. Avec cette assurance, Ania a décidé de se lancer dans l’art du maquillage artistique.

Ania never attended cosmetic school, she is a self-taught makeup artist. « I started with YouTube videos, I learn a lot from them », she revealed. Later, she took some hands-on classes with celebrity makeup artist and Instagram Guru Lovely Lynn. “She showed me some techniques to be a better MUA”, she says. With the support of her family and husband, 6 years later here she is!

 Ania n’a jamais fréquenté d’école cosmétiques, elle est autodidacte. « J’ai commencé avec les vidéos YouTube, j’ai beaucoup appris », a-t-elle révélé. Plus tard, elle a pris des cours pratiques avec la maquilleuse de célébrités et Guru d’Instagram  Lovely Lynn. « Elle m’a montré quelques techniques pour être une meilleure MUA », dit-elle. Avec le soutien de sa famille et de son mari, 6 ans plus tard, elle est là!

In Ania’s words, “In every business, there are always ups and downs. In the makeup business, you have to be very patient and practice the best customer service”. The beginning was challenging for Ania as it would be for anybody else. Although challenging, Ania made sure that her customers were always happy when leaving her door. “Therefore I know what I am worth and my customers would not hesitate to pay the highest to book me,” she says with confidence. She is certain that she provides the best customer service.

Selon les mots d’Ania, «dans chaque entreprise, il y a toujours des hauts et des bas. Dans le secteur du maquillage, il faut être très patient et pratiquer le meilleur service à la clientèle ». Le début était difficile pour Ania comme ça aurait pu être le cas pour n’importe qui d’autre. Bien que difficile, Ania s’assurait que ses clients étaient toujours heureux en quittant sa porte. « Par conséquent je sais ce que je vaux et mes clients n’hésiteraient pas à payer plus pour me réserver » dit-elle avec confiance. Elle est très certaine qu’elle fournit le meilleur service à la clientèle.

Dealing with customers is not easy,  Ania had her share of rude customers but she always remembers that they are always right unless they cross the line. “In this business, if you come to me that means you’ve seen my work and you trust my work so, therefore, I will be very professional and keep calm but if the issue gets out of hands I will not provide you with the service”, she tells us.

In the industry, Ania has worked with Lovely Lynn, Daphney Valmy, Kolored by Kay, African Lady 93 and many more. This career has taken Ania to many places and given her experiences that she still finds unreal. What she finds fascinating about this career is how flexible it is. It does not hold a schedule the way that most other careers do. “Every bride, event, celebrity and photo shoot will have their own call time”, she informs us. She loves being able to make her own schedule.  According to Ania, one can accept jobs that coincide with one’s life or refuse the ones that do not. Therefore she thinks this career is great for moms, students, or people trying to transition out of a job that doesn’t satisfy them.

 Dans l’industrie, Ania a travaillé avec Lovely Lynn, Daphney Valmy, Kolored par Kay, African Lady 93 et bien d’autres. Cette carrière a amené Ania à de nombreux endroits et lui a donné des expériences qu’elle trouve encore irréelles. Ce qu’elle trouve fascinant dans cette carrière, c’est sa flexibilité. Elle ne tient pas un calendrier comme la plupart des autres carrières. « Chaque mariée, événement, célébrité et séance photo a son propre temps d’appel », nous informe-t-elle. Elle aime pouvoir faire son propre horaire. Selon Ania, on peut accepter des emplois qui coïncident avec sa vie ou refuser ceux qui ne le sont pas. Par conséquent, elle pense que cette carrière est idéale pour les mamans, les étudiants ou les personnes qui essaient de quitter un emploi qui ne les satisfait pas.

When it comes to favorite products to use, Ania’s list is long but she mentions her top three. She mentions MAC, NYX, and Maybelline. Ania has not yet used Haitian cosmetic products but she is willing to try if they are of good quality. Even though Ania mentioned some of the brands she likes working with, she tells that the looks do not depend on the name of the product but how well you apply them.

Before she starts to apply makeup on a client, she creates a good relationship with them. She makes sure to ask them what the occasion is and what they will wear. Ania also uses a system where she asks her clients how they like their makeup to be done on a scale of 1 to 5. 1 being on the more natural and 5 more on the dramatic side. Two makeup trends that Ania finds interesting are Fenty Beauty, “Trophy Wife”, the perfect gold pigment that can be swept across the eyelid as a shadow, or on the cheekbone and brow bone as a highlighter. Also, she loves the glitter.

Pertaining to makeup artistry in Haiti, Ania seems to think that it is profitable because of its continued success there. She notices an evolution in the fashion industry in Haiti, as she sees a lot of passionate individuals working hard towards it. Despite their efforts, Ania thinks local network need to support these individuals to achieve greater things. “Of course things are changing there’s more in the market now and I experienced it with a makeup seminar I held last December”, she says.

 En ce qui concerne l’art du maquillage en Haïti, Ania semble penser qu’elle est rentable en raison de son succès continu là-bas. Elle remarque une évolution dans l’industrie de la mode en Haïti, car elle voit beaucoup d’individus passionnés y travailler dur. En dépit de leurs efforts, Ania pense que le réseau local doit soutenir ces individus pour réaliser de plus grandes choses. «Bien sûr, les choses changent, il y en a plus sur le marché maintenant et je l’ai expérimenté avec un séminaire de maquillage que j’ai tenu en décembre dernier», dit-elle.

When asked to give her opinions on the outburst of MUAs in Haiti she said the following, “ I would never think Haiti would have so many MUA today because growing up every female was their own MUA meaning as long you had a “poud Chinwa” you were good to go”. Nowadays our Haitian people are moving along with the rest of the world in fashion. “Hopefully someday we all can get together to share some ideas”, she adds. According to Ania, there’s a lot of competition among us because everyone wants to be on top, therefore everyone is working and willing be better every day.

Lorsqu’on lui a demandé de donner son avis sur la montée des MUA en Haïti, elle a déclaré: « Je ne penserais jamais qu’Haïti aurait autant de MUA aujourd’hui parce qu’en grandissant chaque femme était leur propre MUA aussi longtemps que vous aviez un » poud Chinwa, elle se sentait  « prête pour toutes occasions ». #1. Practice. Practice. And then practice some more.
We all know practice makes perfect, and makeup artistry is no exception. Whether it’s trying out different looks on yourself or your friends, the more you do it, the better you’ll be. « Practice is key,” Learning from professionals is important to becoming a truly great artist, but making practice part of your everyday routine is also critical.”

#2 Get online and market yourself.
Thanks to the internet, the beauty world has changed drastically: If you want to be successful, you have to have a web presence. Social media has had a huge impact on makeup artistry. « Think of all the YouTube and Instagram sensations out there! What’s amazing is that there’s a whole new way to experience ideas. “The more you expose your work and are exposed to others, the more you’ll grow. »
